We study the vernacular architecture of a region to learn age-old ways to build with the climate, ecology, and materials rooted in the local. Creating a "sense of place", which resonates with the spirit of the region, the ecology, and the history of a community is of greater importance than merely expressing the fleeting fashions of a current trend. And yet, innovation and experimentation are inherent in tradition. Vernacular traditions guidelines for evolving and generating new expressions that unite seamlessly with the surroundings.
